Put the most relevant facts near the top
Make the résumé easy to scan on a phone. Give each section a plain heading, use the employer’s actual job title, and move relevant experience above unrelated details.
- ContactName, city and state, phone, and a professional email.
- Target and summaryName the role and connect it to real experience in one or two lines.
- Credential statusSeparate an active RBT certification from training in progress or training completed.
- Relevant experienceShow what you did, who you worked with, and how you followed through.
- Education and trainingList completed programs with the provider and date when the employer asks.

SKILLS
[Only skills you can support with a specific example]The BACB lists separate steps for RBT certification. A completed course or an employer’s job title does not make someone an active RBT. Check the current RBT guide and BACB registry before you describe your status.
| Your status | Clear wording | Leave out |
|---|---|---|
| Active RBT | “Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), active” | A credential claim if your status has expired or lapsed. |
| Training completed, certification not earned | “Completed a 40-hour RBT training program on [date]; not yet RBT-certified.” | “RBT” as a credential, or “certified,” before the BACB grants certification. |
| Training not started | “Applying for a behavior technician trainee role; not currently RBT-certified.” | A course, exam, or competency assessment you have not completed. |
Trade vague claims for work someone can picture
Use this pattern: action + task + how you handled it. Add a number only when you tracked it and can explain what it measures.
| Instead of | Try a specific version, if true |
|---|---|
| “Good with kids” | “Supported classroom routines and transitions, then shared relevant observations with the lead teacher.” |
| “Worked in healthcare” | “Followed written care instructions, completed assigned records, and raised questions with the responsible supervisor.” |
| “Collected ABA data” | “Recorded session data using the assigned definitions and told my supervisor when I found a gap.” |
| “Excellent communicator” | “Gave a concise shift handoff that covered completed tasks, open questions, and the next step.” |
These are examples, not claims to copy. Use a line only when it describes your own work. If you have no ABA experience yet, the entry-level job guide explains which roles may train new hires.
Connect past work without renaming it ABA
| Experience you already have | What to describe | What to avoid claiming |
|---|---|---|
| Education or childcare | Routine support, clear directions, observations, communication with teachers or families. | Clinical assessment or treatment planning unless you held that responsibility and qualification. |
| Care or support work | Following an assigned plan, protecting privacy, documenting tasks, and asking for direction. | Clinical scope or procedures you did not perform. |
| Retail, food service, or customer support | Reliable attendance, teamwork, accurate records, and calm communication in a busy shift. | Behavior intervention experience based only on ordinary customer service. |
Do one accuracy and privacy check before you apply
- Match your résumé title to the employer’s title, then state your credential status separately.
- Remove client names, contact details, diagnoses, photos, case stories, and identifiable session information.
- Check dates, course names, and certification status against your records.
- Read every bullet aloud. If an interviewer asks for an example, can you describe it without breaking confidentiality?
- Save a clean PDF unless the employer asks for another file format.
The BACB requires RBTs to protect confidential information and represent credentials accurately. For the current rules, read the RBT Ethics Code.

Frequently asked questions
What should an RBT resume include?
List contact details, the role you want, accurate credential status, relevant experience, education, and training. Match the employer’s requirements without claiming duties or outcomes you cannot verify.
Can I apply for an ABA job without RBT certification?
Some employers hire behavior technicians before certification; others require an active RBT credential. State your status clearly and check the job posting. See how to find entry-level jobs with training.
Should I include client names or case details?
No. Describe your responsibilities in general terms. Do not put names, identifiable details, diagnoses, session notes, or confidential data on a résumé.
