RBT basics

What is an RBT?

RBT stands for Registered Behavior Technician, a certified paraprofessional who carries out ABA services under the close supervision of a qualified supervisor.

What does RBT stand for?

RBT stands for Registered Behavior Technician. It is a certification, not a job title: the BACB issues it, and only people with active certification may use it. "Behavior technician," "ABA therapist," and "behavior interventionist" are job titles employers use for similar work, and the person in the role may or may not be certified yet.

The handbook explains that the credential was designed for settings where a BCBA or BCaBA already provides services, so most people apply after an ABA organization hires them. That is why many employers hire first and help new staff certify.

What does an RBT do all day?

An RBT carries out the parts of a treatment plan that a supervisor assigns. The BACB lists examples such as conducting preference assessments, running discrete-trial teaching, and writing session notes. Day to day, that usually means one-to-one sessions with a client in a clinic, home, school, or community setting, plus data entry and team meetings.

For a fuller job description with settings and schedules, see the RBT job description and ABA career roles guide.

Is an RBT the same as a BCBA?

No. A BCBA is a graduate-level behavior analyst who designs treatment and can supervise RBTs. An RBT implements services under that supervision and cannot practice independently. Our BCBA vs. RBT comparison covers scope, training, and the job search side by side.

What are the RBT requirements in 2026?

AgeAt least 18 when you submit the certification application
EducationAt least a high school-level education or the equivalent
ChecksCriminal background check and abuse-registry check, each no more than 180 days before you pay for the application
Training40 hours meeting the 2026 curriculum, completed in no fewer than 5 and no more than 180 days
Competency assessmentInitial Competency Assessment after the training and no more than 90 days before you apply
FeesA BACB application fee and a Pearson VUE fee for each exam appointment; check the current amounts in the handbook
Exam deadlineOne year from the day the BACB approves your application

Two independence rules trip people up: neither your training provider nor the person who attests to your eligibility may be related to you, subordinate to you, or employed by you. The BACB does not offer the 40-hour training itself or recommend a provider. The step-by-step order, with every timing window, is in our RBT certification guide.

Is the RBT exam hard?

It is a 90-minute, 85-question multiple-choice test taken at a Pearson VUE testing center. Seventy-five questions are scored and 10 are unscored, and each question has four options with one correct answer. The questions follow the RBT Test Content Outline, so the most useful preparation is your 40-hour training, the competency assessment tasks, and the outline itself rather than shared "real exam" question banks.

How do RBTs keep their certification?

  • Supervision: at least 5% of the hours you provide behavior-analytic services each month, with at least two real-time, face-to-face contacts, one of them individual, and at least one observation of you working with a client.
  • Recertification through 2026: annual recertification with a Recertification Competency Assessment.
  • After you certify or recertify in 2026: a two-year cycle with 12 hours of professional development and a recertification fee; the handbook lists the current fee and late fee.

How much do RBTs make?

Pay depends on the state, the setting, and whether hours are guaranteed. We publish advertised pay from current listings, not a national estimate, on the ABA salaries and RBT pay page. Before you accept an offer, read how RBT guaranteed hours and cancellation pay change what you take home.

How do you find RBT jobs?

Search current RBT jobs if you are certified, or behavior technician jobs if you want an employer to train you first. Our guide to ABA jobs with paid training shows what to ask about who pays for the 40 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a college degree to become an RBT?

No. The BACB requires at least a high school-level education or the equivalent, plus the age, background-check, training, assessment, and exam steps described above.

How long does it take to become an RBT?

The 40-hour training must be spread over at least 5 days and finished within 180. After the competency assessment and application, the BACB tells applicants to expect feedback within about two weeks, and you then have one year from approval to pass the exam. When an employer coordinates the steps, the process can take a matter of weeks.

Can you work as a behavior technician without being an RBT?

Many employers hire behavior technicians before they certify and support them through RBT certification. You cannot describe yourself as an RBT until the BACB certifies you, and an employer, funder, or state may set its own rules for uncertified staff.
