1. Confirm basic eligibility
The current handbook requires applicants to be at least 18 and have at least a high school-level education or equivalent. It also requires a qualifying criminal background check and abuse-registry check. The BACB does not itself require fingerprinting, although a state or employer may.
Timing is easy to miss. The checks must generally be completed no more than 180 days before paying for the application. A qualified attesting certificant confirms the eligibility items, and the application attestation has its own 90-day timing rule. Read the current handbook before ordering a check so it does not become too old.
2. Complete qualifying 40-hour training
Training must meet the BACB’s 2026 curriculum and be completed over no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days, counting both the start and end dates. It may be offered by an employer, university, or online provider. The BACB does not provide or recommend a particular course.
Before enrolling, ask the provider to confirm in writing that the course meets the current 2026 requirements and that it issues the required completion certificate. A cheap course is not useful if its certificate or curriculum cannot support the application.
Ask who the responsible trainer is. Under the BACB’s 2026 training requirements, that person must be a qualified BCaBA or BCBA who has completed the 8-hour supervision training; qualified assistant trainers may help under that person’s oversight. Ask when you will receive the training certificate and whether the employer pays for training time, fees, and later professional development.
3. Complete the initial competency assessment
After completing training, use the current Initial Competency Assessment packet with a qualified assessor. The assessment must be completed no more than 90 days before the RBT certification application is submitted. Some tasks are demonstrated with a client, while others may use role-play or interview formats as the packet permits.
Employers often coordinate the assessment because a qualified BCBA or BCaBA is already part of the clinical team. Ask who will conduct it, whether assessment time is paid, and whether the employer covers any associated cost. Keep your signed copy.
4. Apply and take the examination
Submit the BACB certification application with the required attestation, training certificate, and competency-assessment documentation. After approval, schedule the examination through Pearson VUE. Names on your identification and BACB account must match the testing rules.
The current exam is in English, delivered at a testing center, and allows 90 minutes for 85 multiple-choice questions: 75 scored and 10 unscored. The appointment time includes the tutorial and terms. Use the current RBT Test Content Outline rather than reconstructed or shared exam questions.
5. Work under ongoing supervision
Certification does not make an RBT an independent practitioner. When providing behavior-analytic services, an RBT must have an RBT Supervisor or Requirements Coordinator on record and meet the current ongoing-supervision rules.
The handbook requires supervision equal to at least 5% of monthly behavior-analytic service hours. It also requires at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts each month, at least one individual session, and at least one observation of the RBT providing services. Internet-based observation may be allowed when it meets applicable rules, but passive video monitoring is not the same as interactive supervision.
What changed for RBT maintenance?
The current BACB transition moves RBTs into a two-year recertification cycle and requires 12 hours of professional development units during each two-year cycle. The handbook says two-year recertification applications begin in 2027. RBTs transitioning from the earlier annual cycle may still have a final competency-assessment requirement before the new cycle begins.
Ongoing client-focused supervision does not double as professional development. Eligible PD may include qualifying employer in-service training, ACE Provider events, or behavior-analytic university coursework with the required documentation. Enter and retain documentation as the handbook directs.
Before taking a job, ask who schedules the required PD, whether events and attendance time are paid, and who tracks completion. Check the current PD requirements when planning your recertification cycle.
What to look for in an RBT job
- Certification support: paid training and a named route to the competency assessment.
- Stable expected hours and a written cancellation policy.
- Paid supervision, documentation, and required meetings.
- Mileage and drive-time terms for home or community services.
- Named clinical support and an escalation process.
- Transparent starting pay, differentials, and benefit eligibility.
- Clear safety training, physical expectations, and incident-support procedures.
Questions to ask before accepting
- Who will be my RBT Supervisor or Requirements Coordinator?
- How are supervision contacts scheduled and recorded?
- Which certification costs does the employer cover, and is training time paid?
- What happens to my paid hours when a client cancels?
- Are documentation, team meetings, drive time, and mileage compensated?
- How many locations or clients could I see in a normal day?
- What support is available during a difficult or unsafe session?
Common questions
Can I become an RBT without an employer?
You can complete qualifying training independently, but the competency assessment and application require qualified certificants and documentation. Many candidates find it simpler and less expensive to join an employer that coordinates the remaining steps. Confirm the arrangement before assuming every employer pays.
Can an RBT work independently?
No. RBT is a paraprofessional certification that requires close, ongoing supervision for behavior-analytic service delivery. An active credential without an appropriate supervisory relationship does not authorize independent ABA practice.
Does RBT work count toward becoming a BCBA?
Some activities may qualify when they meet the applicable BCBA fieldwork rules, but RBT employment and routine RBT supervision do not automatically count. Establish a qualifying fieldwork arrangement and documentation system with a qualified BCBA supervisor before counting hours.
How much does RBT certification cost?
Total cost depends on training, checks, assessment arrangements, current BACB fees, and the testing appointment. Employers may cover some or all of these items. Use the current BACB fee schedule and ask for a written employer reimbursement policy rather than relying on an estimated total from a third-party guide.
