ABA salaries by role: what to compare
“ABA therapist” can describe different employer-defined jobs, while BCBA and RBT refer to distinct credentials. Match the advertised role and duties before comparing pay. Use each section below to evaluate the same role, location, setting, and pay unit.
| Role or question | What to compare | Guide section |
|---|---|---|
| RBT salary and hourly pay | Guaranteed paid hours, cancellations, training, travel, and supervision | RBT paid-week math |
| BCBA salary | Billable targets, caseload, nonbillable duties, and benefits | BCBA workload |
| ABA therapist salary | Actual credential, job duties, setting, pay unit, and schedule | ABA therapist pay |
| Current advertised pay | Comparable role, location, setting, and pay unit | Qualifying job-listing sample |
| Questions before accepting | Written pay terms, scheduling, support, travel, and training | Interview questions |
Current advertised pay in reviewed ABA jobs
These are the lowest and highest advertised endpoints among eligible current listings on this board—not a salary survey or a market median. Each row is based on at least ten published jobs from three employers. Pay is shown only in the employer’s stated unit; hourly and annual pay are never mixed.
| Role | Advertised endpoints | Listings | Employers |
|---|---|---|---|
| BCBA | $85/yr–$115,000/yr | 83 | 7 |
| RBT | $18.00/hr–$32.00/hr | 115 | 5 |
| behavior-technician | $19.00/hr–$32.00/hr | 25 | 3 |
How this salary snapshot is built—and what it cannot say
- Included: currently published, non-expired U.S. ABA listings with a structured USD hourly or annual range and a recognized role.
- Excluded: pending, rejected, expired, duplicated, unknown-unit, and pay-undisclosed listings. One-off bonus language is not converted into base pay.
- Minimum sample: ten listings and three distinct employers per role and pay unit. A sample below that threshold is hidden, not filled with an invented number.
- Interpretation: endpoints describe job ads on this board. They are not what workers actually earned, a representative labor-market estimate, a median, or a recommendation.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes detailed occupational wage estimates, but its available categories do not isolate BACB-certified BCBA and RBT workers cleanly. Attaching a broader counseling occupation’s median to either credential would be misleading. For market research, compare current employer postings in your state and setting and ask how each offer defines paid work.
Compare ABA salaries by state using local job offers
The advertised-pay snapshot above combines eligible U.S. listings; it is not a state salary estimate. For a local comparison, match the role and pay unit, then review current employer postings for your area. Our ABA jobs by state page can help you find local openings. We will show a state-specific range only when enough comparable listings from multiple employers support it.
Why we look beyond the headline rate
In a BACB survey of people whose RBT certification had expired in 2024, 57% of respondents selected inadequate pay, 34% unpredictable pay, 41% too many or too few work hours, and 41% lack of supervisor support as reasons for leaving. Respondents could choose multiple reasons. The survey had 1,386 responses from 30,018 invitations—a 4.6% response rate—so these figures describe respondents, not all RBTs. They are nevertheless a useful reason to ask about scheduling and support alongside pay.
RBT salary and hourly pay: calculate the paid week
An hourly rate is not a promise of 40 paid hours. Ask the employer for a realistic schedule, how many hours were actually paid to a typical new hire, and the written policy for same-day cancellations, unfilled cases, documentation, team meetings, and supervision. Work in homes may add unpaid gaps or travel; clinic and school roles can have different schedules.
| Illustrative offer | Weekly calculation | Gross before tax |
|---|---|---|
| A: $27/hr, 24 paid hours | $27 × 24 | $648/week |
| B: $23/hr, 32 paid hours | $23 × 32 | $736/week |
These are arithmetic examples, not observed wages or guaranteed schedules. Offer B pays more in that particular week despite the lower rate. Do not multiply a variable week by 52 and call it an annual salary unless the employer guarantees and pays those hours.
BCBA salary and compensation: price the workload too
For a salaried role, ask what an ordinary week requires beyond billable work: assessments, treatment plans, caregiver and RBT training, supervision, documentation, authorization work, travel, and after-hours communication. Clarify whether a productivity target is weekly, monthly, or averaged across a quarter—and what happens when clients cancel or payer authorization is delayed.
For hourly or contract offers, identify separate rates for direct service, supervision, assessment, meetings, and nonbillable tasks. Check benefit eligibility, paid time off, expenses, and whether the relationship is employee or contractor. A high billable rate can coexist with significant unpaid work.
ABA therapist salary: confirm what the job title means
“ABA therapist” is used as an employer job title and does not identify one standard credential or scope of practice. Check the listing’s required credential, actual duties, supervisor, setting, and state requirements before comparing pay with an RBT or BCBA role. Compare the posted pay unit with realistic paid hours and the work expected; do not treat different job titles as interchangeable salary data.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average ABA, BCBA, or RBT salary?
There is no single reliable average for every ABA role, location, and pay format. The BLS does not provide a clean, occupation-specific BCBA or RBT wage series. We show advertised endpoints only when at least ten comparable listings from three employers support a role and pay-unit group; that snapshot is not a market average or typical earnings estimate.
How much do RBTs make per hour?
It varies by employer, location, setting, and guaranteed hours. Compare the hourly rate with paid training, cancellation rules, travel, supervision, and realistic weekly hours. An advertised rate alone does not predict weekly or annual earnings.
Are BCBA jobs usually salaried or hourly?
Both structures appear in job offers. For salaried roles, compare billable targets with assessments, supervision, documentation, travel, and other nonbillable duties. For hourly or contract roles, clarify which activities receive each rate and which are unpaid.
Are the ranges shown here take-home pay?
No. When displayed, they are endpoints advertised in current, reviewed U.S. job listings. They are not an average, guaranteed earnings, or after-tax pay.
Does a higher RBT hourly rate guarantee higher income?
No. Unpaid cancellations, variable case assignments, travel, and benefit thresholds can make a higher rate less valuable than a steadier offer.
