BCaBA career guide

What is a BCaBA?

A BCaBA is a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst: a bachelor’s-level practitioner who provides behavior-analytic services under BCBA supervision and can supervise RBTs. Requirements change on January 1, 2027.

What does a BCaBA do?

Day to day, a BCaBA sits between the RBT who delivers sessions and the BCBA who is clinically responsible. Typical work includes conducting assessments, collecting and graphing data, drafting program changes for the supervising BCBA to approve, training caregivers and staff, and supervising RBTs. Exact duties depend on the employer, the payer, and state law, which vary in how they recognize assistant behavior analysts.

BCaBA requirements in 2026 and 2027

The deadline that matters now: the BACB must receive a complete application by December 31, 2026 for the current requirements to apply. After that, the 2027 requirements govern.

If your coursework or fieldwork straddles the change, ask your program contact and supervisor which version of the monthly forms to complete so you keep both options open.

Supervision after you certify

  • Your supervisor must be a BCBA who has completed the 8-hour supervision training, and you must meet at least once a month.
  • Without a supervisor on record you are inactive, and you cannot supervise RBTs, deliver the RBT 40-hour training, run competency assessments, or sign attestations.
  • Psychologists certified in behavioral and cognitive psychology by ABPP can supervise BCaBAs only through December 31, 2026.

When you compare BCaBA jobs, ask who your supervising BCBA will be, whether supervision is paid time, and what happens if that BCBA leaves.

The BCaBA exam

The BCaBA exam has 175 multiple-choice questions (150 scored) in four hours, based on the BCaBA Test Content Outline, 6th edition. The application fee is $175 and each Pearson VUE appointment is $125. You get up to 8 attempts within two years of approval, at least 30 days apart. In 2025, 60% of first-time candidates passed and 30% of retakers did; see the pass-rate table.

BCaBA jobs and pay

BCaBA openings are scarce compared with RBT and BCBA roles. Many providers hire a BCaBA into a lead technician, program supervisor, or “assistant behavior analyst” position, and some states or payers limit what BCaBAs can bill. Too few current listings on this board state BCaBA pay for us to publish a figure. Use the RBT and BCBA salary data as bookends, and search BCBA jobs and ABA therapy jobs for roles that accept a BCaBA.

Is becoming a BCaBA worth it?

It often makes sense if…

  • You have a bachelor’s degree and want more clinical responsibility now.
  • Your employer has BCaBA roles, will supervise you, and bills for your work.
  • You want a step toward the BCBA while you save for graduate school.

Think twice if…

  • You plan to start a master’s program soon; your fieldwork hours may be better spent toward the BCBA.
  • Your state or main payers do not recognize the BCaBA for services you would provide.
  • No local employer posts BCaBA roles. Check before you pay for coursework.

Frequently asked questions

Can a BCaBA supervise RBTs?

Yes. A BCaBA with the 8-hour supervision training can serve as an RBT Supervisor. A BCaBA cannot be an RBT Requirements Coordinator; that role requires a BCBA.

Can a BCaBA practice independently?

No. A BCaBA must have a BCBA supervisor on record and meet ongoing supervision requirements. Without one, the BACB treats the BCaBA as inactive.

How much do BCaBAs make?

Too few current listings on this board state BCaBA pay to publish a reliable figure, and few employers post BCaBA roles at all. Expect pay between typical RBT and BCBA ranges, and compare any offer against the RBT and BCBA pay employers advertise in your state.

Is it worth becoming a BCaBA?

It depends on your path. It can make sense if you have a bachelor’s degree, want more responsibility than an RBT now, and are not ready for graduate school. If you plan to earn a master’s soon, many people go straight toward the BCBA, which has far more job openings.

How many BCaBAs are there?

As of October 1, 2026, the BACB reported 4,931 BCaBAs worldwide, compared with 88,013 BCBAs and 259,577 RBTs.
