How much does the RBT exam cost?
Two fees, paid to two organizations: a $65 certification application fee to the BACB and a $45 appointment fee to Pearson VUE for each attempt. The BACB charges no separate retake fee, but each new appointment is another $45. Training and the competency assessment are separate costs that many employers cover; ask before you pay out of pocket.
RBT exam pass rate
The BACB publishes first-time and retake pass rates each year. For comparison, the BCaBA and BCBA rates are included.
| Exam | 2025 first-time | 2025 retake | 2024 first-time | 2024 retake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RBT | 75% (109,341 tested) | 38% | 73% | 36% |
| BCaBA | 60% (1,196 tested) | 30% | 54% | 22% |
| BCBA | 51% (9,955 tested) | 23% | 54% | 25% |
The gap between first-time and retake rates is the practical lesson: candidates who fail once pass at roughly half the rate of first-timers. Schedule when you are ready, not as soon as you are approved.
What is on the RBT exam? The 3rd-edition outline
Since January 1, 2026, the exam follows the RBT Test Content Outline, 3rd edition: 43 tasks in six areas. The question counts below are for the 75 scored questions.
| Content area | Scored questions | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Behavior acquisition | 19 | 25% |
| Behavior reduction | 14 | 19% |
| Data collection and graphing | 13 | 17% |
| Ethics | 11 | 15% |
| Documentation and reporting | 10 | 13% |
| Behavior assessment | 8 | 11% |
Older study guides built on the 2nd-edition task list are organized differently. Check that any practice material says it covers the 3rd edition.
Scheduling, retakes, and deadlines
- Schedule after approval. The BACB reviews your application (usually about two weeks), then you book through Pearson VUE.
- Twelve-month window. You have 12 months from approval to pass.
- Up to 8 attempts in that window, at least 7 days apart, each with a $45 appointment fee.
- Identification must match. The name on your ID must match your BACB account exactly.
- Exam security. Sharing or using recalled exam questions breaks BACB rules and can cost you the credential.
How to prepare for the RBT exam
- Start with the outline. Read every task in the 3rd-edition outline and mark the ones you cannot explain with an example.
- Weight your study by the table above. Behavior acquisition and reduction together are 44% of scored questions.
- Use your competency assessment. The tasks you demonstrated, from measurement to prompting, map directly to exam areas.
- Practice scenario questions. Most questions describe a session and ask what an RBT should do. Ethics questions often turn on when to contact your supervisor.
- Take a timed practice test. Ninety minutes for 85 questions is just over a minute each.
After you pass
Once certified, you must keep a supervisor on record and receive supervision for at least 5% of your service hours each month. You will recertify every two years with 12 professional development units; see our competency assessment and renewal guide for the transition. Then compare current RBT jobs and check RBT pay by state before you accept an offer.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the RBT exam?
85 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. Seventy-five are scored and 10 are unscored pilot questions mixed in, so treat every question as if it counts.
What score do you need to pass the RBT exam?
The BACB does not publish a fixed percentage. The passing standard is set by subject-matter experts using the modified Angoff method, results are reported as scaled scores, and candidates who pass receive a pass notice rather than a score.
Can you take the RBT exam online?
No. The RBT exam is taken in person at a Pearson VUE testing center, or at testing sites on some U.S. military bases. There is no online-proctored option.
How many times can you take the RBT exam?
Up to 8 times within 12 months of your application approval, with at least 7 days between attempts. Each attempt costs a $45 Pearson VUE appointment fee. If you have not passed by then, you must meet the current requirements and apply again.
Is the RBT exam hard?
Most first-time candidates pass: the BACB reports a 75% first-time pass rate for 2025. Retake pass rates are much lower (38%), so it pays to prepare properly the first time.
