Interview preparation

RBT interview questions and answers for ABA jobs.

Practice explaining what you have done, how you follow direction, and when you ask for help. These prompts prepare you for a conversation; they are not a script or a BACB exam guide.

A four-part answer beats a memorized script

For a question about past work, choose a real moment and explain your part. For a hypothetical question, say what you would do next. Do not turn a practice answer into a clinical protocol.

  1. Set the sceneGive only the context the interviewer needs. Leave out names, diagnoses, and other identifying details.
  2. Name your actionSeparate what you did from what a supervisor or teammate did.
  3. Show your judgmentExplain what you recorded, communicated, checked, or escalated.
  4. Close with learningShare an outcome only when you can support it, then say what you would carry forward.

RBT interview questions to practice

Practice questionA grounded answer can explain
“What would you do if you were unsure how to follow an instruction?”How you would pause when safe, check the written direction, ask the supervisor for clarification, and document or communicate what happened.
“Tell me about a time you received corrective feedback.”A real example, the specific change you made, and how you checked that you understood the feedback.
“How do you keep records accurate?”How you record what you observed, follow the required process, correct mistakes transparently, and protect private information.
“How would you respond to an immediate safety concern?”That you would follow the current safety plan and workplace procedure, protect people from immediate harm, and contact the responsible supervisor. Do not guess at a function or invent a new intervention.
“Why do you want this role?”A specific reason tied to the actual job, plus an honest description of the work and training you still need.

The prompt changes with the credential

RBT and analyst roles carry different responsibilities. Use a question that fits the job you are applying for; do not claim decision authority you do not hold.

RolePractice promptWhat your answer should make clear
Behavior technician trainee“What would help you learn a new routine?”How you take instruction, ask questions, follow a process, and name the experience you still need.
RBT“What would you do if a caregiver asked you to change a program?”How you would listen respectfully, stay within your assigned role, and bring the request to the supervisor.
BCaBA“What would you check if progress slowed?”How you review relevant data and implementation, then involve the supervising BCBA when the decision requires that oversight.
BCBA“How would you investigate a mismatch between data and implementation?”How you gather evidence, check measurement and implementation, document your reasoning, and make decisions within your competence.

The BACB outlines the competencies for its credentials; employers write their own interview questions. Use the ABA careers guide for role boundaries, and use the offer checklist for questions you want to ask the employer about the job itself.

Practice on paper, then answer naturally

Use the worksheet to prepare real examples, note follow-up questions, and check the job details you still need. Keep client information out of your notes.

Frequently asked questions

What questions do employers ask RBT candidates?

Employers may ask how you follow a written plan, record session information, respond to feedback, protect privacy, and handle uncertainty. Each employer sets its own interview.

How should I answer if I have no ABA experience?

Say that directly. Give one relevant example from work, school, caregiving, or volunteering, then explain what you learned and what training or supervision you would need. See our guide to entry-level ABA jobs.

Should I memorize sample answers?

No. Use the prompts to organize real examples. For a hypothetical clinical situation, explain how you would protect safety, follow the current plan and workplace procedure, and contact your supervisor.
